Race Report: 4th Fort Striders’ Run

6:13 AM 26 October 2008 at The Fort

The race is called the 4th October Run Festival Race which is organized by the Fort Striders Running Club.

After exposing for the first time the “Team Bald Runner” at the 1st Mayon Trail Run last Sunday, this race was the second exposure of the team in road races and its first exposure in the road races in Metro Manila, as a team wearing their outfits/uniform.

As usual, I woke up early at 4:00 AM and did my “ritual” before leaving my place. I was already at the vicinity of the starting area at 5:00 AM and made my final preparations to include stretching and warm-up jogging for about 30 minutes. I started to sweat and took some more time to slowly jog along the streets of The Fort. At least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time of the 10K race, I entered the assembly area and met the “usual friends and runners” who regularly visit this blog. It was a nice experience talking to these “road warriors” before the race as we try to be relaxed and calm before the gun was fired. I also saw and waved to some of the “runner-bloggers” while waiting for the race to start. After the rendition of the National Anthem and Invocation by one of the Fort Striders’ members, the runners were warned that the Mayor of Taguig City City will be firing the starting gun. All of a sudden, without the usual coountdown from 10 to 1, the fire went off and the race started at exactly 6:13 AM based from my watch. Continue reading “Race Report: 4th Fort Striders’ Run”

“Team Bald Runner” Invaded Bicol & Crowned As “King of Mt Mayon”

Two weeks ago, I formally organized “Team Bald Runner” as an elite group of distance runners based in Metro Manila whose aim is for its members to qualify for future international games and eventually, to the Olympic Games. My outfit, Bald Runner’s Events, provides the training and coaching; accommodation in Metro Manila and food/medical support; employment; and travel & food support to races outside Metro Manila. Initially, I have ten (10) athletes—7 male & 3 female. Most of these athletes are regular winners of road races in Metro Manila. I, together with my staff, manage these athletes and advise them where they are scheduled to compete. If there are cash prizes to be awarded to the top runners, for sure, Team Bald Runner is there. It should be noted that whatever cash earned by any of the athletes is his/her own to keep and we only provide them the necessary advise to save their earnings or advise them to send their earnings to their homes to support their family. BR’s “1,000-Km Club” T-Shirts

I am giving away Finisher’s T-shirt for those who enrolled to Bald Runner’s “1,000-KM Club” and had posted their mileage or number of kilometers in their respective blogs. I prepared the first 10 pieces of this T-shirt.

The Finisher’s T-shirt is FREE! Of course, for those who finished 1,000 Kilometers.

177 Days: Adidas 21K @ 1:48:55 Hours

After running 13+K yesterday morning, I treated this 21K run this morning as one of my weekend long runs and I did not expect much to get a better time and I kept into my mind to have fun and enjoy the run. There was no massage this time two days or one day before the race as I was busy with my running workouts and meeting people for the past days.

I woke up at 3:45 AM today after going to bed before 8:00 PM last night. I did the usual ritual before the race and I was out of my place at 4:35 AM with a plan to make some warm-up and stretching near the starting area. After 10 minutes, I was already near the assembly area as the starting line was totally different place from the previous races in the past. After stretching, I entered the “corral” for the 21 K runners at least 5 minutes before the start time. While waiting for the gun to fire, I met my visitors to this blog and the officers and men from the Philippine Army. We were at least 5 meters from the front runners and busy talking with my former officers and men. Suddenly, the gun was fired and we were off for the 21K race. Based from the data I got from my GF 305, the race started 5 minutes before the scheduled start of the race and it showed a good sign for an outstanding race. 178 Days: Running Aid 3 @ ROX

It was a busy day for me yesterday, Thursday, as I attended two separate meetings, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with government offices in Metro Manila. I was not able to have my early morning running workout because of these meetings. Even if I decided to have my afternoon run after my meeting, I could not squeeze in enough time because I had to meet my staff and talk to some people in my office. So, I was in my long-sleeved Banana Republic polo shirt & Club Monaco pants with matching Salvatore Ferragamo belt and shoes when I attended, for the first time, the third session of Running Aid Clinic/Lectures by Neville Manaois and the Pinoy Ultra Runners. 180 Days: Adidas KOTR; Another “Runabout”; & Others

I got my race packet for the Adidas “King of the Road” (KOTR) 21K Race last Monday. Inside the race packet is a nice and expensive Adidas runner’s singlet, a flyer for the Adidas Shoes recommended to be used in specific road race distances, and the race bib. I think I am lucky this time to get the following race number.

183 Days: HIM3 @ Ayala Alabang

6:30 AM 05 October 2008 @ “Hope In Motion 3″/Ayala Alabang

I woke up at 4:20 AM, took my pre-race ritual, shaved my head, made sure to wear a red-colored running shirt as instructed for the 10K runners, ate oatmeal with ripe banana, and wore my new NIKE Lunarlite Racer. I really wanted to use this new NIKE racer shoes for this particular 10K race, my first 10K race since I arrived from the USA. I had a hard time looking for this kind of shoes when I was in Los Angeles. I only found this shoes being sold at the NIKE Store at The Grove-Farmers Market Shopping Mall at 3rd Street in Fairfax District.

187 Days: “Dirty & Noisy Manila”/”Runabout”

5:30 AM 30 September 2008

I woke up early at 5:00 AM, had my morning ritual, wore my running kit, and picked-up my The North Face Hydration Pack (where I packed my camera, cellphone, ID and cash) and I was out of my place at 5:30 AM.

I had a 3-hour “runabout” along C-5, EDSA, Buendia Avenue, Fort Bonifacio, and The Fort. I was able to cover a distance of 23.06 kilometers in 2:57:48 hours to include my time in brisk walking, crossing the road along the pedestrian lanes, climbing pedestrian overpass, eating two servings of “taho” along the way, buying Propel Vitamin Water in one of the 7/11 Stores and taking some pictures along the sidewalk of EDSA.

I had an average pace of 7.52 kms/hr; 1,597 total calories spent; total ascent of 1,128 meters and total descent of 1,118 meters. Continue reading “187 Days: “Dirty & Noisy Manila”/”Runabout””

189 Days: “Never Stop Exploring”

8:15 AM 28 September 2008: Trail Run at Tagaytay/Mt Batulao, Cavite

After my experience of competitive trail runs and exposure to trail running workouts while I was in California for two months, I started to look for places near Metro Manila where I could run along the mountain trails. After reading the posts and blog of High Altitude, I asked him to accompany me to the trails of Tagaytay which happened to be the trail route used for the The North Face (TNF) 100K Trail Run last July of this year. So, after I arrived in the country, I coordinated with him for a taste of trail running in one of the Sundays of this month.

I left Manila at 6:00 AM of Sunday for Tagaytay and was able to meet with Jerry aka High Altitude; Aldz; and Arjay at Silang, Cavite. After picking them up, we proceeded to Evercrest and started preparing our things for the trail run. We left the premises of Evercrest and followed the trail route for the TNF 10K run. The trail was very challenging because of the mud and slippery condition. We had to jog, run, and jump along the trail with all those loose mud and water along the way. 196 Days: Laoag City Milo 21K Elimination Race

6:00 AM 21 September 2008 in Laoag City

Instead of starting infront of the Provincial Capitol (as published in the newspapers), the Milo Run started along the Ablan Avenue near the Provincial Sports Complex. About 40 runners for the 21K waited for the arrival of the Governor of Ilocos Norte, Hon Michael Keon, the former Director of the Project Gontong Alay and President of the Philippine Olympic Committee as he was late for almost 40 minutes for the 6:00 AM scheduled start of the 21K Race. Anyway, the race started without any problems and the road marshalls were all posted in key intersections as the race proceeded to the main street of Laoag City, Rizal Street, going all the way to the east, towards the direction of the Municipality of Sarrat.
