Running Clinic @ AIR 21

22 09 2010

Days before the conduct of the PAU’s P2P 70K Run in Ilocos Norte, Frederick Gabriel and Vic Viola of takbo.ph approached me with the request for their company to conduct a running lecture and clinic to their staff and employees numbering to about 200. It was only during these conversations that I have found out that these two ultra runners and consistent PAU runners are connected with the company called AIR 21. Their request was very noble that it was worth making it as a priority because of the number of participants plus the interest they put into the importance of running as part of the company’s sports program and the company’s program to look for the welfare of their subordinates through running as part of their active lifestyle.

In addition, one of the objectives of the running lecture and clinic at AIR 21 is for everybody at the said company to know the basic and scientific way of training in running. It is a part of the company’s training and preparation for their participation in this year’s October 10 A Run For Pasig River. I was informed that almost all the staff and employees will be joining the said running event. Days before the conduct of the lecture & clinic, I have already the impression that the owners are sports-minded and health buffs. (Note: Mr Lina is a golf player while his wife has progressively finished her first 5K run)

The lecture and clinic was decided to be conducted on the Company’s Health & Medical Expo Day which was held on the Birthday of Mrs Sylvia Lina, co-owner of the company and wife of Mr Alberto Lina, President & Owner of the Company. The lecture and the first session of actual running was conducted at 3:00 PM of September 6, 2010 at the Company’s Cargohaus near the NAIA Airport Complex.

Birthday of the 1st Lady of the Company

I was impressed that the owners of the company, Mr & Mrs Lina and their two daughters attended the lecture and the practical part and actual demonstration of the stretching exercises, running drills, and a 30-minute run.

Lecture Room Filled With Staff & Employees

The lecture room was “jampacked” with the staff and employees of the company that most of them remained standing during the 1 1/2 hours of lecture and open forum. Basically, the lecture covered the “Why’s” of Running, Steps To Follow, Laws of Training in Running, Practical Tips In Running, Phases of Training, and lastly, Etiquette In Running. Some concerns and apprehensions from the participants were answered during the Open Forum.

Lecture On Running Basics & Principles

The lectured was followed with actual involvement of the participants in the conduct of stretching exercises, running drills, and a 30-minute steady run. The clinic is scheduled to be conducted every Monday afternoon up to October 10 with the hope that every participant will be able to finish the scheduled 3K and 5K runs on race day.

The following pictures will best describe the activity on September 6 with Mr Alberto Lina; Mrs Sylvia Lina; their daughters and the rest of the staff and employees of AIR 21.

2nd Running Clinic @ HP

10 09 2009

This was the 2nd time that Hewlett-Packard  requested me to conduct a lecture to its employees on the basics and principle of training in running. This was the 9th occassion that the Team Bald Runner conducted a running clinic. This time, the lecture was conducted at the HP Branch at the San Miguel Corporation Properties Building in Mandaluyong last 25 August 2009 after office hours through the invitation of Celyn Trinidad of HP.

Running Clinic @ Head Office, APL

25 08 2009

This time it was at the Head Office of the American Presidents Line (APL) located in one of the corporate buildings at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Complex. This was our 8th Running Clinic to the different Corporate Offices situated in Metro Manila.

The first part of the Running Clinic was a Lecture at the Conference Rooms of APL. It started at 3:15PM of August 17, 2009 and finished at 5:00PM. The lecture was followed with an Open Forum and there were lots of interesting questions from the participants. The questions were answered and Coach Titus Salazar initially conducted a portion of the practical exercises to be done by the participants.

The second part of the running clinic was the practical application of the basics and principle of training in running. The practical part was done at the beachfront/Seaside of the Mall Of Asia Complex. The session was led by Coach Titus Salazar and was assisted by the members of the Elite Team Bald Runner. Warm-Up and stretching exercises were done before the group was made to jog a portion of the Seaside Area. After the drills were introduced and done, the participants were made to group themselves for a team shuttle run competition. The exercises made each of the participants perspire and shed some calories. They were even taught how to pick-up/grab water cups and drink while they are on the run, a good starter for future runners joining their first road race.

To the APL group, thanks for the hospitality and the “freebies” you shared to the Team Bald Runner.

Running Clinic @ CITIBANK

23 07 2009

This is the 7th Running Clinic that the Team Bald Runner had conducted since it started this program. And we have maintained it to be FREE.

This time, the running clinic was done at CITIBANK’s Main Office in Makati City. The coordination was made by Owen King, one of the staff, through an e-mail he sent me. The e-mail which I received while I was still in United States started the “ball rolling” and final coordination had been made in a few days.

Finally, the Team Bald Runner conducted the 1st phase of the Running Clinic at the CITIBANK Tower in Makati City o/a 5:00 PM last Friday, 17 July 2009. The lecture was attended by 20 participants which consisted of officers, staff and employees of the bank. The lecture and open forum lasted for about 2 hours in one of the lecture/seminar rooms of the building.

After the conduct of the lecture, Nigel Romano, CFO of Citigroup Philippines and Owen formally had given to us the used shoes they have collected from the participants as contribution to my Project Donate A Shoe. Thank you very much!

At 6:30 AM, the following the day, Saturday, July 18, 2009, the CITIBANK running group started their practical demonstration and exercises at the ULTRA Oval Track. Coach Titus Salazar and the Sabal Brothers (Elmer & Gerald) of the Elite Team Bald Runner conducted the practical demonstration and exercises. Coach Titus demonstrated the proper running form, footstrike, and other important “basics” in running, to include stretching exercises, drills, and techniques. The session lasted for two hours.

It was nice to see almost all the participants in the Running Clinic during the conduct of last Sunday’s GLOBE Run For Home at The Fort. I hope that the Running Club/Group of CITIBANK will grow in the number of members and will soon come up with their own corporate-sponsored road race.

Running Clinic @ APL Pricing Administration Center

15 07 2009

Insular Life Corporate Center, Ayala Alabang, Muntinlupa City/10-11 July 2009

Mr Mark Parco, the Director of the Pricing Administration Center of the American President Lines (APL), invited the Team Bald Runner to conduct a Running Clinic to its staff & subordinates through the efforts of Mr Allan Martin who consistently acted on the details of this activity. After coordination through e-mails, a Running Clinic was conducted to the employees of the said office at the Seminar Room “B”, Tower 1, at the Insular Life Center Building at Filinvest City in Ayala Alabang.

The running clinic was divided into two phases, a lecture and an actual demonstration of running, exercises, and drills to the participants. The lecture on the Basics and Principles of Running was conducted at 3:00-5:00PM last July 10 and the actual demonstration and practical exercises were done the following day at 6:00-9:00 AM, July 11.

The lecture was attended by almost 40 employees to include Mr Mark Parco and wife, Tiffin, who are competitive runners who are permanent “fixtures” and participants of weekly road races in Metro Manila. The lecture of the Bald Runner was complemented with more explanations and examples from Mr Parco as he was a former Captain of the UP Diliman Track Team. It was a very fruitful lecture to every employee.

On the following day, members of the Elite Team Bald Runner helped in the conduct of the actual demonstration and practical exercises in running. The participants were made to warm-up through jogging, did some stretching exercises, ran along the roads of the Filinvest City, did some running drills, and finally, did a short competition of a shuttle run where the group was divided into three groups. The actual demonstration and practical exercises on running were highly appreciatedby the employees as they requested from their Director the conduct of running activities at least two times a week among them. The Director, in return, voluntarily promised to provide them with a running program for them to finish at least a 5K road race and that he will support their registration fees.

I highly appreciate such heads/directors of offices who are responsive to the needs of their employees for them to be motivated to adhere to physical activities and a healthy active lifestyle. By doing so, I think these employees will be more productive and more focused to their assigned tasks. My congratulations to Mr Mark Paco for being a good example of a corporate head who, aside from being a good “running” example to his wife and kids, he is also a good example to his employees…a true mark of a good leader!

Running Clinic: AZEUS Runners Group

5 05 2009

It simply started with a SMS or text message from a certain “Jaydee/JD” requesting me to conduct a running clinic to a group of his officemates few weeks ago. After some exhanges of SMS, the running clinic lecture was scheduled on the 23rd of April 2009.

I found out later from JD that his group is composed of employees working for an office called “AZEUS”, an IT serice provider and IT software developer whose main headquarters is located in Hongkong. Their office is located within the Ortigas Complex and they wanted to have their running lecture clinic within the area and for their practical running demonsration to be done at the ULTRA Oval Track.

Finally, this group of running enthusiasts and beginners arranged a lecture room at the PowerTips at The Podium as the venue of the lecture. These guys really spent for the rent of the said lecture room which could fit a group of 30-40 participants. I was surprised to see such venue at the 5th Floor of The Podium which is a venue complete with white board which serves as the white screen, fully air-conditioned, with LCD projector and computer. It has also chairs and tables and it was a comfortable and silent place for a lecture presentation.

The group consisted of about 35 participants who are beginners and interested to learn the scientific way of training for running. All of the participants are single and in their mid and late 20’s. The lecture started at 7:30 PM as most of them came directly from their office. The lecture went well and an open forum was conducted for the Q & A portion. The lecture was concluded at 9:30 PM with a request from me and Coach Salazar that an actual practical demonstration must be done in order to apply what we had lectured to them.

I found out later that the participants of the lecture is the core group of the AZEUS Runners Group/Team whose members would like to join weekend road races in Metro Manila. JD, as one of the prime movers of the group, had just started running last November of 2008 and he is a regular visitor of this blog.

Due to the rains last week, the actual practical demonstration and application was finally scheduled last night at the ULTRA Oval Track. A group of 17 employees from AZEUS finally showed up at 7:30 PM and Coach Salazar taught them on how to warm-up properlyby jogging around the oval, did stretching exercises, did some “jumping and foot” drills, and a relay run to the group. All the “basics” in running were properly explained by Coach Salazar through demonstration and application by each of the participant. The demonstration covered running form, running strides, midfoot vs heel-strike running, stride frequency, and arms swinging. The actual running demonstration and practical exercises were finished at 9:30 PM with full satisfaction from the participants.

As an extra and bonus part of the practical instructions, we taught each of the participant on how to pick-up a water cup from a water station and for them to drink the water while running. We also taught them the courtesy and etiquette in using the oval track.

Before it rained and before the group finally left the Oval Track, the group presented Certificates of Appreciation to Coach Salazar and to myself. Thanks, Jaydee and to your group. I hope  you have learned a lot from our lecture and practical demonstrations on running.

Good luck to the AZEUS Runners Club and Congratulations for joining and finishing the Southern Race 5K & 10K Runs at the Ayala Town Center last Sunday.

This running clinic program of Team Bald Runner will continue to be conducted to interested groups and it is FREE. It is the objective of the Bald Runner and Team Bald Runner to spread its advocacy to let everybody appreciates the benefits of running through scientific approach in training in order to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

1st Corporate Running Clinic

9 01 2009

The idea of conducting a Running Clinic was conceptualized during a brief visit of the Coaches of Team Bald Runner and myself at the office of the Reinier Pacific last month. Amado Castro, Jr, the President of the Company who is a runner and race walker, requested us to visit his office for final “tips” and suggestions for his participation to a 12-Hour Race Walk Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was in this meeting that Mr Castro suggested the idea of conducting a Running Clinic to all of his staff and personnel. Due to the holiday season, the running clinic was finally set on the afternoon of January 8, 2009.

bald-runnerreinier

So, this plan was realized yesterday afternoon at the training room of Reinier Pacific. The running clinic started at 2:00 PM with a brief introduction from Mr Castro as to the background and purpose of the said running clinic. The lecture was divided into two parts.  I presented a lecture on the WHY? part of running while the two coaches of Team Bald Runner, Major Ferdie Espejo Jr and Coach Saturnino Salazar, presented a lecture on the HOW? part of running with the proper training aids.

dsc05346

About 30 staff and personnel of the company attended the running clinic. The running clinic lasted for about 3 hours to include the time for open forum and additional information about running. The second part of the running clinic will be the ACTUAL RUNNING demonstration and practical exercises at the ULTRA Oval Track on Thursday next week. The second part of the clinic will consist of conducting proper warm-up and stretching exercises before and after the run; and the running proper.

The overall objective of this running clinic is to offer to everybody to engage in physical activity and exercise, through running/jogging/walking in order for the company to be more productive by having a healthy mind and body among its personnel. On the side of the Team Bald Runner, it is our advocacy to encourage more people to embrace a healthy lifestyle through walking/jogging and ultimately to running and be competitive to oneself.

Ladies and gentlemen, this running clinic is FREE! If you are a part of a group or a community intending to form a running club, we can schedule a 2-part running clinic (2-3 hours of lecture and another 2 hours actual demonstration on the oval or on the ground). If you are interested, just leave a comment to this post or send an e-mail to jovie75@hotmail.com.
