2008 Bataan Memorial Death March

The 2008 Bataan Memorial Death March was held on 30 March 2008.

In the later months of 1999, I’ve been fascinated and surprised that a sports event among the US military and civilians is being held yearly to commemorate a very important part in the history of World War II that happened in the Philippines in a place called White Sands, New Mex.ico, USA.

As the Chief of Training for the Philippine Army, I conducted this kind of sports event on the second Sunday of April 2000 with the same rules & regulations & format but with a distance of 25 kilometers along the actual route of the Bataan Death March. The sports event was a success but that was the first and the last of it.

Since then, I’ve been browsing on the Internet on the yearly results of this event and even interviewed some of our soldiers who attended military schooling near New Mexico who were required to join in the event.

This is one of my plans after retirement from the active service to experience running a marathon on this special event. Maybe, I’ll give it a try on next year’s event (2009).

However, if there are any interested individual/s who would like to join me and experience this marathon event, we could form into a TEAM to represent our country. Maybe, this TEAM will be the first one to represent our country.

Please leave a comment if you are interested and we will talk about the details of our planning, preparation, training, and support system.

The following were the results of the 2008 Bataan Memorial Death March in every Division/Category

  1. I participated in this event for the first time this year, finishing 1st in my division and 5th overall for the Civilian Light category, as part of a multi-stage running campaign to honor and thank the members of our armed forces, past and present, for their service. I have named this campaign, RunningBull’s Run to Honor America’s Veterans, with the proceeds going to support the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. The event was an amazingly spiritual journey of personal discovery following in the shadows of the former POW survivors who sent us off at the starting line with a personal message and a handshake. There were 9 such men present this year who each hosted a breakout session the day before in which they recounted to us their personal experiences along with the other educational programming sessions that constituted the pre-race Expo.

I can only imagine what it must have been like to coordinate and conduct such an event in the actual footsteps of the Bataan Death March. I applaud your efforts and highly recommend this event to any and all future participants.

  2. joshua, thanks for the comment and for visiting my blog. it took me a lot planning hours and very good staff to conduct such kind of sports event on the very same route where the historic event happened in 1941. i was supported by the philippine army & the armed forces of the philippines and without the support of the corporate/business sector. at present, an ultramarathon event on the actual 102-kilometer distance of the bataan death march is held every second weekend of april and the participation of runners is not much. congratulations for coming up with a campaign to honor and help the American Veterans and for finishing the 2008 Boston Marathon with an impressive time. good luck in your future races and your “advocacy”.
