Are there any Philippine athletes participating in the long distance running events?

That is very sad. Of the 28 Olympic sports, I think long distance running is probably one of the sports that a Filipino can eventually have a good chance of medaling. Running is not an expensive sport that needs elaborate facilities or a professional competitive league.

workaholic, that is true. but our sports program in the athletics/track & field is zero, nada, none, bokya. i really don’t know what the NSA for this sports is doing to our elite athletes. one of my runners was “expelled” from the list of our national elite athletes being supported by the NSA because he competed in a race with a prize money. i don’t blame my runner because he has a family to feed & support, which means that the support he is getting (if ever there is any) from the NSA was not enough even if he is a soldier from the Philippine Army. one time, i saw this runner cooking his own food for dinner a day before the 2008 subic marathon which was sinigang na bangus (one piece) with lots of kangkong being shared with two other runners! very sad, indeed!

The British are having great success in these games despite their biggest star, Paula Radcliffe, not getting a medal due to her recent injuries. A few years ago, the UK lottery started funding their athletes. Perhaps, a Philippine lottery / sweepstakes type program to fund athletes may be an idea. Obviously the British have been an athletic power even before the days of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddel (“Chariots of Fire”). However, I have no doubt that this funding has helped them out.

workaholic, we have that kind of arrangements with our lottery and with the earnings of the PAGCOR (Phil Amusement and Games Corporation) which oversees our casinos & lotto earnings. but the PSC is blaming the lottery and PAGCOR of not remitting the amount as stipulated in the law and most of the time if remittances are given, they are very late and not regularly given to the athletes. up to this time, there is no accounting of the exact money the PSC is receiving from the lottery/PAGCOR and the money being given to the national sports associations (NSAs).
