47:52 Mins @ 4th Global City Run

6:00 AM 20 April 2008

My GF 305 registered a time of 47:49 minutes Finish Time for the 4th Global City Run held this morning at The Fort but for the record, as I gleaned from the digital clock reading as I crossed the finish line, my unofficial time was 47:52 minutes. At last, the race organizers measured the route with a little deviation of about 60 meters less than the supposed 10,000 meters. But that is okey since most of the runners, to include myself, had to take a direct route while running along the road, sometimes cut corners, and run at the farthest edge of the road, thereby shaving off some distance. I guess, the race organizers did a very good job this time in measuring a good road race distance.

As planned, I was able to sustain my race strategy of an even pace for the entire distance. Never stopping on the water stations and maintained my pace at the uphill portion along the road near the International School and towards Market! Market! Never looking at my watch for the whole duration of the race, I did not know that I was running at an even pace of 4:48 minutes per kilometer which was faster than what Mark had suggested at 4:54 minutes per kilometer.

The following data were taken from my GF 305:

Distance—9.94 kms                     Time—47:49 mins

Average Pace—4:48 mins/km       Ave Speed—12.5 kms/hr

Maximum Speed—18.5 kms/hr    Total Calories—739 cal

Average HR—166 bpm                 Maximum HR—170 bpm

Running Shoes—ASICS Gel-Cumulus 8

Music—Foo Foo Fighters & Hoobastank

Running Kit—Nike “Speed” (Compression) Shorts & Nike Stretchable Shirt ( I bought these items last year)

I will be posting my pictures and an update of the Project Donate A Shoe later today.

To the runners and finishers in today’s 4th Global City/ANTA Run, Congratulations and Keep on Running!!!

Congrats on your time Sir! I tried to keep up with you when the race started but I gave up after a km or so. Ang bilis nyo. Ang bilis nyo din mag post sa Blog. Hehe. I hope they come out with the results soon – not like OYM. You’re an inspiration to age-groupers like myself and some of my office mates.

Your donate-a-shoe project is also very inspiring. I was happy to learn that one of your recipients was Mr. Ocarisa (spelling??). If there’s anybody deserving of a new pair of running shoes – it would be him. My brother and I raced in a 5k run in BF Home s last Easter where Ocarisa topped the 39 and up age group. Hope to be able to contribute to your worthy cause in the future. Keep it up Sir!

    Hi BR,

I actually suggested a 4:48 average pace in my comment in your D-1 Day: 4th Global City Run post. : ) Great race huh, the sun cooperated as well. Im sure a lot of the runners there recognized you. Dapat kasi di na sila nahiya. : )

I got a new PR of 45:52. The slow pace alert helped a lot as I set it to sound off if I fall below 4:48 per km. The distance that registered on my 305 is 9.7, same as my previous measurement the day before while driving in the car. I did not cut any corners but did take a straight line when the roads curved. That is the shortest way from point a to b and that’s supposed to be the way they measured the course. Well, that’s according to Runners World. I just don’t know if the race organizers follow a standard in measuring courses.

    Br,

Salamat sa Garmin for the pacing. Makulit nga lang but the slow pace alert does work. : ) You were my inspiration as well not to slow down. During the entire race, I always felt you were just there and that kept me running. hahaha

I have friends who also want to donate as well. When is the next donate a shoe event? If ever you start a drive for casual used shoes or basketball sneakers, I have several pairs to donate as well.

As with the garmin distance, I believe this is because of the Software/firmware I have on my unit. Im using software version 2.8 with a gps chipset version of 3.0 These are the latest ones available for the 305. You can see this by going to Settings/General/About Forerunner.

The easiest way to check if you need an update is to just use WebUpdater. This will automatically keep your unit’s software current.

Wow runningshield, you have 2 units? The 405 is already available but it does have a time bug (gets delayed when there is no gps). It doesnt have an other sport mode as well, only running and cycling.

yes i have 2 units. But frankly i like the 205 better. it has a louder beep sound compared to the 305 which is very usefull during races. and i dont particullary like wearing the heart strap on the 305’s. feel uncomfortable with them

    Runningshield,

I can clearly hear the beeps of my 305 even with my headphones on. Hmmm, better have it checked as yours is still under warranty. As for the HR strap, its just a bit “hard” at first. It gets flexible as you use it over time.

    BR,

I previously had to provide DIY and personal support to my 305. As with most tech stuff, its best to know everything so you can maximize its use. There are also a lot of undocumented procedures with the device and that’s where blogs and forums (motionbased) are very helpful. : ) I had my forerunner “die” twice. The first time, it was right before the gig run. So I ran “naked”. Hahaha, bwisit talaga if I remember that morning. I ended up with a new PR that time. I was able to resuscitate the 305 by just holding mode and enter at the same time. While depressing these buttons, I then press power with my left thumb for a second after which I release power. Voila! No more worries about having another replacement.

Yes, I did have mine replaced already. I had to wait 2 months for the refurbished unit to arrive. It was damaged due to excessive vibration from slapping my hand on the side of the boat. So be gentle with your 305s, its no gshock : ). A fall directly hitting concrete can either crack the lcd or break one of the seals that makes it water resistant.
