D-1 Day: At Subic Freeport

19 January 2008 (8:30 PM)

I arrived at Subic Freeport on or about 4:00 PM today (Saturday) with my driver and security. I was able to keep in touch with the Philippine Army Team runners at the parking area of the Subic Oval Track where the registration office is located. I was able to register as VIP Runner and got my reserved race number and singlet. Thanks for the help and involvement of the Philippine National Police as one of the Organizers/Sponsors of the event. A Police Officer facilitated my registration without any problem. He even invited me for an informal dinner at the Oval Track/Finish Line area.

I was happy to see Kilometer Markings (to be placed along the route) being prepared near the registration office. Three days ago, I sent a text message to PNP Chief Superintendent Samuel Tucay suggesting him to place mile/kilometer markings along the route of the Subic Marathon and told him also that I am going to run the Half-Marathon.

Learning from my past mistake from the Clark 10K Run last weekend, I immediately oriented myself with the route by slowly driving along the roads where the marathon will pass. The first 6-7 kilometers is relatively flat with the next two kilometers as gradual uphill going towards the airport. The last 1-2 kilometers going to the turn-around point is a “roller coaster” terrain. I could see that going back to the finish line will be an easier task in terms of the terrain but the heat of the rising sun will a harder task to overcome.

I am bringing along my Nathan Water Belt for my water supply and instructed my driver/security to be ready to replenish my water supply at the 12-km mark.

We had dinner/”carbo-loading” at Aristocrat Restaurant (spaghetti, pancit canton, boneless chicken barbecue w/ java rice, & SMB Light Beer) and presently staying in one of the hotels/inns near the SBMA Office which is few meters away from the starting line.

I was informed that another group of Kenyan runners (a different group from the Clark Freeport Marathon’s Kenyan runners) will be joining the race.

Assembly time will be 5:00 AM and Start of the Race will be at 6:00 AM tomorrow.

D-Day: 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run

13 January 2008

I woke up at 3:30 AM to shave, take a shower, brush my teeth, eat a half-cup of oatmeal, wear my running attire and start my trip to Clark. At 4:00 AM, I was already on the road coming from my quarters at Fort Bonifacio.

I arrived at the Start Area fifteen minutes before the start of the 10K run. After a brief warm-up and stretching, the race promptly started at 6:00 AM.

I could feel that I was running at a very fast pace after running 500 meters. I was trying to control my pace and run comfortably. I was trying to find out if there were kilometer markings along the way but I was frustrated to see nothing. How I wished these detailed distance markings should be a “must” in races like this. Such markings are good references for a runner’s average pace.

It was only when I reached the turn-around point (5K) where I found out that my average pace was a faster pace than what I planned. My time at 5K was 23:07 minutes and I was running at 4:37 minutes per kilometer!

After the turn-around point, I realized that the first 5 kilometers were all downhill. The next 5 kilometers were all uphill and my pace came naturally at a slower pace. Between the 6th and the 8th kilometer points, I slowed down and maintained my pace with a lady runner and a male runner who is within my age category. On the final 600 meters before the finish line, I was able to maintain a lead from these two runners.

I finished the race in 50:36 minutes. So far, this is my best PR time since the last week of October of last year when I started to seriously run again.

To my fellow runners, see you next Sunday’s 2008 Subic Half-Marathon!

Postponed Indefinitely

The announced 7th rendition of the DND-AFP Gintong Pangarap Half-Marathon scheduled on 17 February 2008 is postponed indefinitely.

I just got the information that the “AFP-PNP Olympics” is scheduled to be conducted on the third week of February 2008 as most of the AFP runners will be attending this event. However, the different Special Services and Sports representatives of the Major Services will meet on the early part of February 2008 to discuss the final schedule of the 7th DND-AFP Gintong Pangarap Half-Marathon.

Appropriate announcements will be made.

Race Packet: 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run

One of my staff officers gave me my race packet for the 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run today. The packet has my race number and route map for the said race. This officially makes me one of the runners for the 10K run this coming Sunday, 13 January 2008.

To all the runners, see you in Clark Freeport this early Sunday morning!!!

North Star 10K Run

This is considered as the Pride of the North in terms of Running Events. It was usually held on the last Sunday of December every year since 1979. Unfortunately, the last North Star 10K Run was held in 2002 and it was never revived up to this day due to lack of sponsors and resources.

Mr. Pompey Crisologo and his brother, Danny Crisologo (sports columnist and sportsman who passed away) were the owners and race directors of this event. The Crisologos in Laoag City are the owners of the North Star Marketing, Inc which is the sole distributor of Petron Gasul in Ilocos Norte.

The race event started as a final test for the year-long running workouts to those who practiced running regularly among the youths, professionals and residents in Laoag and Ilocos Norte which was done on the last Sunday of the year. Cadets, Officers & Enlisted Personnel from the Philippine Military Academy would join this race regularly. Even runners from Manila would join as “free rides” were provided by the Farinas Bus Company, being one of the sponsors of the race.

The 10K route starts from the old Suba, Paoay Sports Complex/at the vicinity of the old Golf Driving Range of the Fort Ilocandia Golf Course. From that point, the runners go south along the Paoay Road where the finish line is at the point on the road directly beside the bellfry/tower of the famous Paoay Church at Poblacion, Paoay.

The first kilometer is the only hard part of the course as it is going uphill. After passing the 1st kilometer mark, the course is relatively a smooth downhill and flat terrain up to the finish line. The route is very near to the seashore as sand dunes are seen on your right while the Paoay Lake is seen at your left for the first 2 kilometers of the route. The rest of the route are bounded by rice fields/garlic fields on both sides of the road.

Mr Pompey Crisologo was my “informal coach” in running when I started training for the marathon. As an observer, he would make a critique on my running form and give tips on running training techniques and strategy. He reads a lot and he was way ahead of me in knowing the best and the latest technology in running, to include accessories in running and latest running news at that time.

This morning, I had a chance to see him in his office/commercial establishment and he is still very active and youthful at his age of 72!!! He is still wearing a running shoes with his jeans. Little did I know that he was 52 years old when he finished his first marathon in 1981 with an average pace of 6:00 minutes per kilometer. He said that he is still helping the sports development in the province with a  sports (running) project spearheaded by his business company and the Office of the Governor where they conduct 5K races in the different municipalities in Ilocos Norte and later have a 10K race for the top finishers/qualifiers in the 5K races. The top runners in this 10K race are “spotted” as future athletes of the province and given proper training as well as scholarships for high school and college degrees. He is proud to say that the province of Ilocos Norte had been a consistent winner/champion in Athletics/Track & Field in the Regional Athletic Meets for the past six years.

How I wish this running event would be revived soon with the help of Governor Michael Keon of Ilocos Norte and former Commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission, Director of the “Gintong Alay” and a former athlete/runner.

“Naive” Runner!

I requested for an extension of leave after my schooling in Fort Benning for me to be the “baby sitter” for my kids and “driver” to my wife from May 1984 up to three months and got the chance to watch the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

During weekends and on my wife’s “days off”, I would join local road races from 5K-10K in cities near Los Angeles. Sometimes, I would travel 80-90 miles east of Los Angeles to the Lake Perris Skydiving Center for Skydiving every other weekend.

In the local road races, I’ve been winning trophies and medals in my age category (30-35 years old) which I show and brag to my wife and to my kids once I get home.

One time after attending one of the races, I got hold of a flyer of a 10K run whose route/course was a few blocks away from the house. I was enthusiastic to register immediately knowing that the course was almost the same route where I had my regular running practices and I was very familiar with the terrain.

On race day, I usually stay at the back of the pack and didn’t mind looking or staring at other runners. So, when the race started, I slowly squeeze my way into the middle of the pack and started looking at runners while passing at them. I observed that the men were good-looking and had nice bodies and most of them are in pairs. While the ladies were running like men and have nice bodies.

Little did I knew that I joined the Gay Pride 10K Race for the City of Los Angeles!!! My wife and my young kids were laughing at me after I told them that I joined and finished the said race. I felt embarassed and just told them that all I wanted was to run, don’t miss the chance to run a road race within the neighborhood and maintain my physically fitness.

Bottomline? I was too naive to ignore what the race was all about. The gays I’ve seen in this race were decent-looking guys and very athletic that you could hardly notice that they are such. They are strong and fast runners, too! Well, I did not bring home any trophy or medal on this race.

The gays and the lesbians beat me this time!!!
