Latest Updates: 1st Bataan Ultramarathon Race

To: All Interested Runners

1. This race will definitely be open to 100 runners/participants only. Each participant should have finished at least one (1) marathon race within one year prior to the scheduled ultramarathon event.
2. Leaving your intention to participate in this race event through our Comment & Feedback at www.bataan102.com and by stating your name, age, e-mail address and contacting number/s will entitle you a reserved slot among the 100 runners.
3. Registration Forms will be available on this site soon. However, registration will be accepted at the Project Donate A Shoe booth during the PSE Bull Run Race on 18 January 2009 on January 18, 2009. Henceforth, Project Donate A Shoe booth in every weekend road race will be the registration booth for this ultra run event.
4. Last day of registration will be on 15 March 2009. No late registrants will be accepted.
5. All registered participants are encourage to join a “test run” and at the same time. This “test run” will serve as an ultramarathon clinic on 22 February 2009 in order to have a group run from Balanga, Bataan to the Finish Line (San Fernando, Pampanga) covering a distance of 52 kilometers. Details will be posted at this site and at http://www.baldrunner.com.
6. Other details of this race event will be posted as soon as necessary.
7. For your training program reference(s), please visit http://www.baldultrarunner.wordpress.com.

8. We will try our best to have this event sanctioned by PATAFA (even if PATAFA have not created a dedicated committee for ultra running events in the country). We sent e-mails to the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), an entity under the IAAF, for them to include this event in their race calendar for 2009 last month but we received no reply from them yet.
9. During the actual race event, we encourage each participant to have their support crew and pacer after Km Post #7. It could be the whole family in a car or van or friends on bicycles or motorcycles.
10. We will not remind you about “honesty” of running on the said ultra event. Please remember that you will not be cheating the race organizers but you will be cheating yourself. I firmly believe that ultramarathon runners are matured and decent breed of serious runners.
11. Since you have decided to join and participate in this historic event , I want you to be proud to be a part of  this ultramarathon race event that depicts an important part in the history of the country and the entire world.

12. This is an ultramarathon race event (solo event) and not a relay run.

13. The cut-off time for this ultramarathon event is further adjusted to eighteen (18) hours.

14. Participants will be responsible for their respective transportation to the Starting Line and from the Finish Line to Metro Manila.

Hi TBR, may I know how much is the registration fee? My Team here in Laguna want to join and they’re asking me about the said inquiry. It’s unfortunate that we will be running in the tnf thrill of the trail this coming Sunday and can’t see you in the pse bull run.

Thanks for posting and best wishes!

The registration fee is Two Thousand Pesos (P 2,000) for each participant. You can register in any of the future races where the Project Donate A Shoe is available. We’ll be at The Happy Run on the 25th of January.

  2. Hi BR. With the news about the marathon being cancelled, some runners without marathon experience yet are asking if the 52K test run on Feb is enough to qualify them to join the ultramarathon instead. Is the test run enough to replace the marathon finish requirement and enable them to join?

jinoe, the 52K “test run” for the bataan ultra on 22 feb will be a tough run that needs planning & preparation as each runner would provide his/her own support needs & transportation requirement to balanga, bataan where the run will start and back to manila from san fernando, pampanga where the runners will finish. the purpose of this run is to orient the runners on the route of the race as it passes through thickly populated areas and simulate the condition/s of running under the heat of the sun. however, we encourage also the ultramarathon participants/runners to join the 42K “runabout” in metro manila on march 8 as this run will be for a “noble cause”. after finishing these two runs, we will give the final decision if they are qualified for the ultramarathon event not later than 15 march. for those who are interested to join the 52K “test run”, please leave a comment at http://www.bataan102.com or send an e-mail at jovie75@hotmail.com. jinoe, you can post this answer to your comment at takbo.ph. thanks!

    Hi BR.

I admire the flexibility. I don’t have any marathon run last year so i am also dependent for any upcoming marathon before this ultra. As for this extended pre-qualification, i hope you can set it as early as possibly so as not to conflict with work or our own scheduled long run.

According to Lion Caldwell (a seasoned US ultrarunner)..if you can run a sub 4-hour marathon you can run an ultramarathon.

In case, a conflict in schedule with test run and runabout arise, can i just show you my GF 405 showing a sub 4-hour marathon? 😛
Or just show up in Pasig Ultra one of these days to run a sub 4-hour 105 laps.

Anyway, i’ll try to make ends meet to join the test run and runabout. I cannot afford to miss this race.

albert, running an ultra or marathon race on an oval track or 1-mile loop on a street which is plain & flat is entirely different from running an ultramarathon/marathon race event on the roads which have uneven terrain. lion caldwell, who is 35 years old, could finish a 6-mile run in 41+ minutes or less and he is really fast. and the running weather in the united states is much, much cooler than running in the country. so, i suggest you should join the 52K “test run” on feb 22 as most of us are not as young and fast as dr. lion caldwell plus the fact that the general weather condition in the country is hot and the route will be an uneven terrain. thanks for the comment and with the hope that i was able to answer your concern.

BR, I do hope the Bataan 102 this year will be the start and will continue as one of the ultramarathon event in the country. I wanted so much to join race but due to operational obligations it will take me years to be able to do this race that’s why I pray for this race to be successful. More power to you sir and keep doing what your doing.
