50:36 Minutes

This is my unofficial time in the 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run held this morning. I was able to improve my time for the said distance by 1:31 minutes since my race at the 27th RUNNEX Executive 10K Run held last 02 December 2007.

The following were the data taken from my TIMEX Zone Trainer Digital Heart Monitor Watch:

Time Elapsed—50:35.36 minutes

Time In Zone (145-165 HR)—48:42 minutes

Maximum HR—173

Minimum HR—124

Average HR—166

Total Calories—797

I hope to improve my time for the 2008 Subic Half-Marathon this coming Sunday as compared to my last Half-Marathon race in Los Angeles last 02 December 2006. Breaking the 2-hour time will be a nice goal to attain.

D-Day: 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run

13 January 2008

I woke up at 3:30 AM to shave, take a shower, brush my teeth, eat a half-cup of oatmeal, wear my running attire and start my trip to Clark. At 4:00 AM, I was already on the road coming from my quarters at Fort Bonifacio.

I arrived at the Start Area fifteen minutes before the start of the 10K run. After a brief warm-up and stretching, the race promptly started at 6:00 AM.

I could feel that I was running at a very fast pace after running 500 meters. I was trying to control my pace and run comfortably. I was trying to find out if there were kilometer markings along the way but I was frustrated to see nothing. How I wished these detailed distance markings should be a “must” in races like this. Such markings are good references for a runner’s average pace.

It was only when I reached the turn-around point (5K) where I found out that my average pace was a faster pace than what I planned. My time at 5K was 23:07 minutes and I was running at 4:37 minutes per kilometer!

After the turn-around point, I realized that the first 5 kilometers were all downhill. The next 5 kilometers were all uphill and my pace came naturally at a slower pace. Between the 6th and the 8th kilometer points, I slowed down and maintained my pace with a lady runner and a male runner who is within my age category. On the final 600 meters before the finish line, I was able to maintain a lead from these two runners.

I finished the race in 50:36 minutes. So far, this is my best PR time since the last week of October of last year when I started to seriously run again.

To my fellow runners, see you next Sunday’s 2008 Subic Half-Marathon!

Buenavista or Sabal?

Sgt Eduardo “Vertek” Buenavista of the Philippine Air Force or Sgt Cresenciano “Volting” Sabal of the Philippine Army?

If these two top marathoners of the country will run/compete tomorrow at the 2008 Clark Freeport International Marathon, I predict that Sgt. Cresenciano Sabal of the Philippine Army will win the race.

Time Stealer

It took me some time to analyze and decide to post in my blog regarding another “weird” experience I encountered during the 27th RUNNEX Executive 10K Run held at UP Campus last 02 December 2007.

After getting the printed overall results of the 10K race, I found out that there was a big discrepancy on the time registered on my Casio Pathfinder Watch and my time registered on the printed results. Based from my watch, my time in the 10K race was 52:07 minutes but the printed results appeared that I had a time of 52:36 and the runner next to me had a time of 52:39 minutes. Another runner, who finished ahead of me had a time of 52:06 minutes. It appears that the runner who finished with my unofficial time (?) was ranked # 21.

I was expecting that my name should appear as the runner to have finished with a time of 52:06 minutes but it was a name of another runner.

On the published printed results, it is impossible that another runner was behind me with a difference/distance equivalent to a distance covered within 3 seconds. It could be seen in my pictures, which I posted in my previous post, that there was nobody running/chasing me behind me within a distance of 50 meters. I was sure that I was Number 21 because one of the Race Marshalls counted me as ranked # 22 at Km # 6 among the 10K runners. At Km # 7, I was able to overtake one runner and increased my lead over him for about hundred meters.

I could not think of any reason why some runners do this kind of cheating. If these “cheater/s” think they are taking advantage over other runners, they are wrong! They cheating their own selves!

If somebody had stolen the race number and timing “chip” of my daughter during the 2006 City of Angels Half-Marathon, I had also the sad experience of somebody stealing my race/finish time during the 27th RUNNEX Executive 10K Race.

D-2 Day: 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run

I am back in Manila. Tonight, I will attend the 55th Birthday Celebration/Party of my classmate in PMA who happens to be the newly-designated Commanding General of the Philippine Air Force at Villamor Air Base, Pasay City. This party will serve as my initial “carbo-loading” in preparation for the race on Sunday.

Definitely, I do not have plans to run today and tomorrow. I will see to it that I will sleep at 10:00 PM tonight and 8:00 PM tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I will have my body massage at Olympia Spa in Makati City, where I’ve been a regular customer for the past 17 years. The next thing to do is to have a one-hour walk in one of the Shopping Malls to look/shop for another ASICS Tiger Running Shoes and running attire. Later in the afternoon, I will watch the movie “I am Legend”; eat more pasta for dinner; and sleep early.

To my fellow runners, see you in Clark Freeport on Sunday morning!

Cebu (Mountain) Run

10 January 2008 (AM Run)

I was supposed to start my early morning run today at 6:00 AM but I started fixing my clothes and uniform for the day after waking up from my bed. Anyway, I finally started my run at 7:00 AM after doing at least 20-minute stretching exercises inside my room. I left the Hotel building taking the road going up to the mountains at the back of Marco Polo Hotel.

The road is so steep and winding going up to the mountains in Barangay Busay of Cebu City. There are so many cyclists taking this road as their favorite route because of the challenging terrain and lesser traffic. I was the only one running/jogging going up to the mountain of Busay. I ended my run into the mountain when I reached the Mountain View Subdivision area and it served as my turning point back to the Hotel.

In my estimate, I covered a distance of 5-6 kilometers going up the mountain in Busay with an average pace of 9-10 minutes per kilometer.

On my way back to the Hotel, I was running at a faster pace because the road was downhill except for few meters of flat and ascending portions of the road. Upon reaching the Hotel, I extended my run by going around the Hotel’s Parking Area and towards the extension area which served as my cool-down run.

My run covered an estimated distance of 12 kilometers or 7.5 miles with a time of 1:32:14 hours. This running workout was an easy and very slow run.

The following data were taken from my TIMEX Watch Zone Trainer Digital Heart Rate Monitor:

Elapsed Time—1:32:14 hours

In Zone (145-165 HR) Time—1:15:22 hours

Maximum HR—163

Minimum HR—92

Average HR—144

Total Calories—1,140

Treadmill Run

09 January 2008 (10:45 PM-11:30 PM)

I arrived in Cebu City at 9:00 PM today. I have an official activity to attend tomorrow at the Central Command, AFP in Lahug, Cebu City.

Whenever I am in Cebu, I have the opportunity and privilege to stay at Marco Polo Hotel, courtesy of the Central Command. At this time, I will be staying in Cebu for two days and two nights before going back to Jamindan. Cebu is still within the Area of Operations of my Command.

After settling my things in my room at the Marco Polo Hotel, Cebu, I immediately changed to my workout attire and proceeded at the Hotel’s Fitness Center located at its Basement.

I had my treadmill run for about 40 minutes with an average pace of 5:00 minutes per kilometer. My speed registered at 13.3. The treadmill also registered 8 kilometers or 5 miles as the distance I ran and 550 calories I burned.

My TIMEX Watch Zone Trainer Digital Heart Rate Monitor registered the following data:

Elapsed Time—40:08 minutes

Time In Zone (145-165 HR)—32:56 minutes

Maximum HR—168

Minimum HR—122

Average HR—154

Total Calories—559

Postponed Indefinitely

The announced 7th rendition of the DND-AFP Gintong Pangarap Half-Marathon scheduled on 17 February 2008 is postponed indefinitely.

I just got the information that the “AFP-PNP Olympics” is scheduled to be conducted on the third week of February 2008 as most of the AFP runners will be attending this event. However, the different Special Services and Sports representatives of the Major Services will meet on the early part of February 2008 to discuss the final schedule of the 7th DND-AFP Gintong Pangarap Half-Marathon.

Appropriate announcements will be made.

Race Packet: 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run

One of my staff officers gave me my race packet for the 2008 Clark Freeport 10K Run today. The packet has my race number and route map for the said race. This officially makes me one of the runners for the 10K run this coming Sunday, 13 January 2008.

D-12 Day: 2008 Subic Half-Marathon Run

08 January 2008 (6:15 AM-7:20 AM)

I had my practice run at The Fort this morning. After running three times along the road infront of the International School, which is basically the road extension from Market! Market, I had the experience of running along the road that surrounds the Bonifacio High Street Mall. I followed the route being used by a group of cyclists doing some criterium along the said route. I was able to see male & female runners running the said route whose faces are very familiar in weekend races in Metro Manila. I think they knew me because they greeted me and smiled. I had to greet and smile at them, too!..I was not wearing my runner’s cap!

I was able to run three times along the said route before going towards MC Home Depot and turning left towards Jollibee and ran towards One McKinley. From The Infinity, I proceeded back to Fort Bonifacio.

I was able to run 7 miles or 11.2 kilometers with a time of 1:05:04 hours. I considered this workout as an easy run.

The following data were taken from my Zone Trainer Heart Rate Digital Monitor:

Elapsed Time—1:05:04 hours

In Zone Time(145-165 HR)—1:03:44 hours

Average HR—153

Maximum HR—164

Minimum HR—109

Total Calories—892
