I salute you, BR! Conquering the Bulldog 50k at age 56! And having the keen memory to describe the whole experience in minute detail. You're one of a kind, BR. You never stop to inspire me and the other runners. I hope before I reach 55, I have already completed a full marathon. That's 5 years of training. Do you think I will be ready by then, considering that I just started at age 50?

Dear BR, you described the course perfectly. Congrats on completing the 50K (I can't imagine ever doing that), I did the 25K and it was very tough. I'm a walker so it took me a lot longer. Between mile 4 and 7 up Bulldog Trail was very tough and hot. I felt better about a mile before the 2nd waterstop then had to scramble up the sandstone rocks and down some steep terrain and then up that long hill before we finally started down again. I was beginning to doubt that I'd ever reach the 3rd water stop (it was at mile 13 not 12) but they were absolutely wonderful!

In prior weeks, we had practiced parts of the course but not the whole thing. The views at the top were great. The water stops were fantastic (love that ice, snacks and the sponges, everyone was just teriffic and very helpful, it was nice to sit and rest a few minutes in the shade). That last uphill on Spur trail was a pain (one guy collapsed screaming as he had leg cramps but after awhile managed to get up, scream some more, and finally continue and finished the race, they even sent in an ambulance for him but fortunately they didn't have to make it up and down the single file trail to try to get him out).

I'm so happy I finished. I want to practice on various sections again so I can do better. I see you plan on doing the Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon in 2009, I did it this past march (in honor of my Dad who was on the original Death March in WWII) and hope to do it again next year as well so perhaps I'll see you on the course. I thought that marathon was tough because of the altitude, desert, sand and wind, ha! Bulldog was tougher.

Congrats!!!
